    FAQs about Inventions & Patents

Question: I lost my original grant patent, can I get another?

Answer - The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issues only one original grant copy of a patent to the inventor. However, you may obtain a certified (blue ribbon and seal copy) by contacting the Certification Division at 800 972-6382 or (571) 272-3150.

Question: What is the process that the Office Of Technology Transfer (OTT) uses to decide when to file patents and license technology to companies?

Answer - A U.S. patent application must be filed prior to any public disclosure of an invention to preserve international patent rights and must be filed within one year of the official publication date or public use to preserve U.S. patent rights.

    Question: Can I obtain a world-wide license?

Answer - Usually, the licensing of inventions is granted on a worldwide basis although this is not required.
